HISTORY OF THE BUCKING HORSE SALE

The Miles City Roundup was started in 1950, when an informal gathering of stock contractors began meeting every spring to purchase horses. About 30 years ago the Jaycees were asked to assist in forming an organization. The organization of the Bucking Horse Sale helped give the event the international reputation it now enjoys.

This event has turned Miles City into the site of a three day cowboy Mardi Gras, with street dances slated for both Friday and Saturday nights. The Bucking Horse Sale is a convention of rodeo stock contractors from all over North America who come to watch the best of the bucking horses try to throw a determined bunch of riders. The horses are sold at auction immediately following the rides. The feistiest command high prices and appear in rodeos all over the world.

Many people come to Miles City every May for this event just for the fun, and to see old friends. The event features a parade, trade show, gun and coin show, art shows, barbecues and dances.
